- Everyday uses
- An important copper ore — malachite has been smelted to produce copper for over 4,000 years. Architectural decoration — the Malachite Room in the Hermitage Museum features columns of solid malachite. Ground as pigment in painting — used in ancient Egypt and in European art until the 18th century. Modern decorative objects: vases, boxes, tabletops, and luxury interior design elements.
- Spiritual meaning
- Malachite is a powerful emotional cleanser and transformer, drawing out and absorbing negative energies. It breaks unwanted patterns and conditioning rooted in childhood trauma, making it exceptional for deep emotional healing work and depression. Use with care as it can amplify emotions.
- Formation
- Malachite forms near the surface of the earth in the oxidised zones of copper ore deposits, where copper-rich groundwater reacts with carbonate minerals in limestone. The result is a banded, botryoidal or stalactitic stone.
- Where it is found
- The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the world's primary source. Other deposits are in Zambia, Russia (Ural mountains), Australia, USA (Arizona), Namibia, and Israel.
