Purple agate is a banded variety of chalcedony displaying beautiful layers of purple, lilac, and white. Its purple hue comes from trace amounts of iron and manganese. Treasured since ancient Babylon as a stone of protection and eloquence, it has been used in jewellery, amulets, and ceremonial objects for over 4,000 years across many civilisations.

- Everyday uses
- Used decoratively since ancient times — Mesopotamian cylinder seals, Egyptian amulets, and Greek rings all used agate. Idar-Oberstein in Germany has been the world capital of agate cutting and polishing for over 500 years. Used in watchmaking and precision instruments as bearings due to its hardness and smooth finish. Industrial use: agate mortars and pestles are used in chemistry labs to grind materials without contamination. Bookends, coasters, decorative slabs, and luxury home décor items.
- Spiritual meaning
- Purple agate harmonises the mind, body, and spirit. It gently grounds scattered energy while opening spiritual awareness. It builds inner strength and encourages self-acceptance, helping people move through difficult emotional periods with steadiness and grace.
- Formation
- Agate forms inside gas cavities in volcanic rock, where silica-rich groundwater deposits layer by layer over millions of years. Each band represents a different period of deposition. The purple colour in purple agate is due to iron and manganese impurities within the silica layers.
