Rose quartz is a pale pink variety of quartz whose colour comes from microscopic fibres of a related mineral called dumortierite. It has been carved into love tokens since at least 600 BCE and was used by both the Romans and Egyptians in face masks, believing it prevented ageing.

Formation

Rose quartz typically occurs as massive aggregates — large solid masses — within granite pegmatites. The pink colour is caused by titanium, iron, or manganese impurities, or by microscopic inclusions of other pink minerals.

Where it is found

The finest rose quartz comes from Brazil (Minas Gerais) and Madagascar. Other sources include South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Namibia, and the United States (South Dakota).
