Ruby zoisite (anyolite) is a naturally occurring combination of bright green zoisite matrix studded with red ruby crystals, often with black hornblende inclusions. Discovered in Tanzania in 1954, it is found only in a small area of that country. The vivid contrast of red, green, and black makes it one of nature's most spectacular mineral combinations.

- Everyday uses
- Carved into ornamental objects, animal figurines, and decorative sculptures — the size of some boulders makes large carvings possible. Used in jewellery as cabochons and free-form pieces — the combination of colours makes each piece completely unique. Collected as mineral specimens by collectors worldwide. Tanzania's gemstone industry is a significant source of national income and employment.
- Spiritual meaning
- Ruby zoisite is unique in combining the fiery energy of ruby with the calm, growth-oriented energy of green zoisite — creating a stone of passionate but heart-centred living. It is excellent for those who have become emotionally shut down by grief or depression, helping to reignite passion for life while keeping the heart open and compassionate.
- Formation
- Ruby zoisite forms in metamorphic rocks when aluminium-rich fluids interact with calcium silicate rocks under high temperature and pressure. The ruby (corundum) crystals and the green zoisite form together in the same metamorphic event. This combination occurs only where very specific chemical conditions are met — hence its limited geographic occurrence.
- Where it is found
- Ruby zoisite is found almost exclusively in the Longido and Merelani regions of Tanzania, East Africa. Some material has been reported from India and Pakistan, but the Tanzanian source is by far the most significant and commercially important.
