Apatite is a group of phosphate minerals that come in a spectacular range of colours — blue, green, yellow, violet, and colourless. Its name comes from the Greek 'apatein' meaning 'to deceive', because it was frequently mistaken for other minerals. Remarkably, apatite is the main mineral in human teeth and bones — you carry apatite inside you.

- Everyday uses
- Fertilisers: phosphate rock (primarily apatite) is the source of virtually all phosphorus fertilisers that feed the world — one of the most critical minerals in global agriculture. Your teeth and bones are made of hydroxyapatite — the biological form of this mineral. Used in the production of phosphoric acid for food processing (sodas, cheese) and industrial chemicals. Dental materials: synthetic hydroxyapatite is used in toothpaste and bone repair materials. Nuclear industry: apatite is used to immobilise radioactive waste in glass matrices.
- Spiritual meaning
- Apatite is a deeply motivating stone that clears away confusion, apathy, and negativity. It is particularly helpful for depression caused by lack of purpose or direction, as it reconnects people with their passion and humanitarian instincts. It stimulates the third eye chakra, enhancing intuition, creativity, and self-expression.
- Formation
- Apatite forms in a wide variety of geological environments — igneous rocks (granites, pegmatites), metamorphic rocks, and sedimentary deposits. Marine sedimentary apatite (phosphorite) forms from the accumulation of marine organism remains on the ocean floor over millions of years.
- Where it is found
- Gem-quality blue apatite is found mainly in Brazil (Minas Gerais) and Madagascar. Other sources include Mexico (yellow apatite), Myanmar, Canada, Russia, Sri Lanka, and the USA. Large phosphorite deposits for industrial use are mined in Morocco (the world's largest reserve), China, and Russia.
