Rock crystal is the purest, colourless, transparent variety of quartz. The Greeks called it 'krystallos' meaning permanent ice — they believed it was ice so completely frozen it could never melt. The very word 'crystal' comes from this belief. Rock crystal has been carved into sacred objects, balls, and vessels by virtually every culture on Earth.

Everyday uses

The first optical lenses were made from polished rock crystal — before glass lenses were developed. Crystal balls for divination have been made from rock crystal since at least ancient Rome. High-purity quartz from rock crystal is used in advanced electronics, optical instruments, and lasers. The Japanese tradition of polishing quartz spheres (tama) dates back centuries. Rock crystal was carved into elaborate vessels, goblets, and religious objects throughout history.

Formation

Rock crystal forms in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites where nearly pure silica-rich water cools slowly, allowing perfect transparent crystals to grow without impurities. It can form enormous crystals — the largest quartz crystal ever found weighed 40 tonnes, discovered in Brazil.

Where it is found

Found worldwide: Brazil (world's largest producer), USA (Arkansas — famous for doubly-terminated crystals), Madagascar, Alps (Switzerland, Austria), China, Russia, and Japan (famous for perfect spheres). Arkansas produces exceptionally clear material used in electronics.
