Black tourmaline (schorl) is the most common variety of tourmaline and one of the most sought-after protective stones in crystal healing. It is a boron silicate mineral. Miners in ancient times carried it believing it protected them from earth spirits and underground dangers.

- Everyday uses
- Piezoelectric properties: black tourmaline generates an electric charge when pressure is applied — used in pressure gauges and scientific instruments. Pyroelectric: it generates voltage when heated — historically used in early electrical research. Because it becomes electrically charged, tourmaline is used in air ionisers and some water purifiers. EMF protection products — tourmaline is incorporated into some phone cases and wearable tech.
- Spiritual meaning
- Black tourmaline is the premier protective crystal, creating an energetic shield around the wearer that deflects and transmutes negative energy, psychic attack, and environmental pollutants. It is deeply grounding, connecting the base chakra to the earth, invaluable for anxiety, panic attacks, and overwhelming fear.
- Formation
- Tourmaline forms in granite pegmatites — the last pockets of magma to cool during the formation of granite. These pegmatites are rich in boron and other rare elements. The black colour in schorl comes from high iron content. It often forms long striated prismatic crystals.
