Coral is an organic gemstone formed by the calcium carbonate skeletons of marine polyps — tiny sea creatures. Ancient Egyptians placed coral in tombs to protect the dead, and Native American tribes used it in ceremonial objects. It has been used in jewellery for over 30,000 years, making it one of the oldest known gemstones used by humans.

Formation

Coral forms from colonies of tiny marine animals called polyps, which secrete calcium carbonate exoskeletons. Over centuries, these skeletons accumulate into coral reefs and branches. Gem-quality precious coral grows slowly in deep, cold water — particularly red coral (Corallium rubrum) from the Mediterranean and Pacific oceans.

Where it is found

Mediterranean red coral is found primarily around Italy (Sardinia, Sicily, Naples), Spain, Tunisia, and Algeria. Pacific coral is harvested around Japan, Taiwan, and Hawaii. Due to conservation concerns, much coral is now regulated and some sources are protected. Always ensure coral jewellery comes from sustainable, legal sources.
