Ruby is a variety of corundum coloured red by chromium, and one of the four precious gemstones alongside diamond, emerald, and sapphire. Ancient Hindus called ruby 'ratnaraj' — the king of precious stones. Burmese warriors believed rubies made them invincible in battle. Ruby has been the most valued coloured gemstone throughout human history across virtually every culture.

- Everyday uses
- One of the four precious gemstones — used in the finest jewellery throughout human history. The first working laser (1960, Theodore Maiman) used a synthetic ruby crystal to produce the laser beam. Watchmaking: synthetic ruby is used as bearings (jewels) in precision watch mechanisms to reduce friction — most quality watches contain ruby jewels. Ruby is the July birthstone and traditional 40th wedding anniversary stone. Synthetic rubies were the first commercially produced synthetic gemstone (Verneuil process, 1902).
- Spiritual meaning
- Ruby is the stone of the life force itself — it activates and amplifies the energy of the base chakra, filling the body with vitality, passion, and courage. It is exceptional for those suffering from depression caused by low energy, lack of motivation, or feeling powerless. It ignites the will to live fully and love deeply.
- Formation
- Ruby forms in metamorphic rocks (particularly marble) where aluminium-rich rocks are subjected to high heat and pressure, and chromium is present to give the red colour. The finest rubies come from marble-hosted deposits in Myanmar (Burma), where the absence of iron allows pure, vivid 'pigeon's blood' red colours to develop.
- Where it is found
- Myanmar (Burma) — Mogok Valley produces the world's most prized rubies. Other significant sources include Mozambique (now one of the largest producers), Thailand, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The Sunrise Ruby, a Burmese stone, sold for $30 million in 2015 — the highest price ever paid for a ruby.
