Sapphire is a variety of corundum — the same mineral as ruby — but coloured blue by traces of iron and titanium. One of the four precious gemstones, it has been treasured for millennia. Ancient Persians believed the sky was a giant sapphire reflecting its colour. Medieval clergy wore sapphires believing they represented heaven. The engagement ring of Princess Diana (now Kate Middleton) features a 12-carat Ceylon sapphire.

- Everyday uses
- One of the four precious gemstones — used in the finest jewellery worldwide for millennia. Industrial use: synthetic sapphire (aluminium oxide) is used as scratch-resistant watch crystals, phone camera lenses, LED substrates, and high-pressure windows. Apple Watch used synthetic sapphire crystal for screens in early models. Used in scientific instruments requiring extremely hard, transparent windows. Sapphire is the September birthstone and traditional 45th and 65th anniversary stone.
- Spiritual meaning
- Sapphire is the stone of wisdom, truth, and divine favour. It calms the mind, sharpens focus, and aligns the wearer with their highest values and purpose. It activates the throat and third eye chakras, making it excellent for those struggling with self-expression, mental clarity, or depression rooted in living out of alignment with their true values.
- Formation
- Sapphire forms in metamorphic and igneous rocks under high temperature and pressure. Blue sapphires are coloured by the presence of both iron and titanium. Star sapphires show asterism — a six-rayed star — caused by needle-like rutile inclusions oriented in three directions within the crystal.
- Where it is found
- Sri Lanka (Ceylon sapphires) has mined them for over 2,000 years. Other major sources include Kashmir (India — producing the world's most coveted velvety blue sapphires, now extremely rare), Myanmar, Madagascar (now the world's largest producer), Thailand, and Australia.
