Spinel is a magnesium aluminium oxide mineral occurring in stunning colours — red, pink, blue, violet, orange, and black. For centuries it was confused with ruby and sapphire — the 'Black Prince's Ruby' in the British Imperial Crown is actually a 170-carat red spinel. Its name may come from the Latin 'spina' meaning thorn, referring to the sharp points of its crystals. It is now gaining full recognition as a precious gemstone in its own right.

- Everyday uses
- One of the most historically important gemstones — for centuries impossible to distinguish from ruby and sapphire without modern testing. The 'Black Prince's Ruby' (actually red spinel, 170 carats) has been part of the English Crown Jewels since 1367. Many historic 'rubies' in royal and religious treasures worldwide are actually spinels. Used in scientific research as a high-temperature refractory material. Synthetic spinel is used in optical instruments and as a substitute for gems in lower-priced jewellery.
- Spiritual meaning
- Spinel is a stone of renewal, revitalisation, and hope. It is particularly valuable for those experiencing burnout, chronic fatigue, or depression caused by exhaustion — it replenishes energy reserves at a deep cellular and energetic level. It inspires perseverance through difficulty and reignites hope and joy when they have been lost.
- Formation
- Spinel forms in metamorphic rocks — particularly in marble and dolomitic limestones subjected to heat and pressure — often in the same deposits as corundum (ruby and sapphire). It also forms in alluvial deposits where it is released from eroded parent rock. Its crystal habit is typically octahedral (eight-sided).
- Where it is found
- Myanmar (Burma) — Mogok Valley produces the finest red and pink spinels alongside its legendary rubies. Sri Lanka produces a wide range of colours. Tanzania (Mahenge — exceptional neon pink/red spinels), Vietnam, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan are also important sources. The Badakhshan mines of Afghanistan have produced spinel since ancient times.
