- Everyday uses
- One of the earliest stones used in jewellery — found in Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Roman jewels over 4,000 years old. Ancient seals and signet rings were made from carnelian — wax does not stick to it. The Koran recommends carnelian rings; Prophet Muhammad's seal was a silver ring set with carnelian. Ground as an orange-red pigment in historical paints and dyes.
- Spiritual meaning
- Carnelian is an energising stone that stimulates motivation, creativity, and courage in those who feel stuck, depressed, or apathetic. It activates the sacral and root chakras, boosting vitality, passion for life, and willingness to take action. Particularly helpful for artists, performers, and anyone needing creative confidence.
- Formation
- Carnelian forms in the cavities of volcanic rocks through the deposition of silica from groundwater. The orange-red colour comes from iron oxide (hematite) inclusions distributed throughout the microcrystalline structure.
- Where it is found
- The finest carnelian historically came from Arabia and India (Broach, Gujarat). Major sources today include Brazil, Uruguay, India, USA, Madagascar, and Siberia.
